Description

Two men. One is a prince of royal blood. The other is a half-breed, part human, part elf. But the part that is human is also royal.

Two women. One is a princess, pampered and protected. The other lives in the forest, the leader of a band of rebels. She too has eleven blood.

This is their story--the tale of love and hate, courage and cowardliness, and magic both dark and light...

KLIATT has praised Deborah Chester's novels for being "exciting," "page-turners," and "suspenseful"

Summary: "fun, but forgettable"

This is a fun book, but nothing special.

The world is interesting, but nothing about it stands out as all that unique. I've seen variations of many themes handled in other titles, though The Sword does do a lot better at handling many of these ideas than some books do. The characters are well developed; easy to like the likeable and dislike the dislikeable. No one feels too "black and white". Unfortunately, though the characters feel real enough, they didn't interest me all that much. Again, they were well handled, but there wasn't anything all that unique about them.

The book moves along at quite an intense, fast-paced rate during the first 150 pages. Then, it slows down somewhat. The book is further hampered by the introduction of a couple of characters (whom will undoubtedly play a valuable role later in the series) somewhat late in the book. After having spent roughly 200 pages with one character, I was somewhat put-off when the viewpoint character was suddenly changed. The book felt disjointed because of this. (Gladly, the book returned back to more familiar characters soon after, so I was able to continue enjoying the story from then on.)

The ending is quite good, returning to an intensity much like the beginning. I'll be reading The Ring (book two of this series) though I would advise readers that so far, the series is a plain, fun read that will pass the time, but won't offer anything unique or all that special.

Summary: "May not be Lord of the Rings, but it's entertaining nonetheless"

Deborah Chesters's "The Sword, The Ring, & The Chalice" trilogy isn't really as epic, nor as unique, as Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", but it's acceptable enough as a fantasy tale. The first installment, "The Sword", is a great introduction to many characters that you either care for or love to hate. Despite some obvious cliches, the plot is very interesting, and the characters are well-developed. The pacing flows nicely: never rushed, never slow. I enjoyed it when I read it.

Summary: "Great Series!"

This is great series with lots of ups and lots of downs. Although there are more ups than downs. I would recommend this series to anyone of any age.

Summary: "Great Characters"

I totally enjoyed this book. I purchased the next two volumes before I even finished the first book. The plot is excellent and I would suggest this to anyone who likes Robin Hobbs,Terry Brooks, etc.

Summary: "I ended up likeing it."

I have owned this book for several years, but never really got past the first chapter. I dont know, i just could not get it started. When I finally did, i really enjoyed it. Chester jumps around at times, but these back stories, I assume, are crucial to the rest of the triology. The book does an indepth character study of the lead, Dain, it is very interesting how you go on the ride with him.
